요시토모 나라는 일본 네오 팝(Neo Pop) 세대의 대표 작가로 저항과 반항에서부터 조용한 사색에 이르기까지 다양한 감정적 복잡성을 다양한 표정의 아이들과 귀여운 동물들로 표현하는 현대 미술의 선구적인 인물이다. 커다랗고 둥근 얼굴에 반항심 어린 표정의 소녀와 강아지나 고양이 같은 동물들이 등장하는 그의 예술은 우리 내면에 감춰진 두려움과 고독감, 반항심, 잔인함 등의 감정을 미묘하게 포착하고 있다.

1959년 일본 아오모리현 히로사키에서 태어난 그는 1987년 아이치 현립 예술대학(愛知縣立藝術大學) 대학원을 졸업하고, 이듬해 독일의 뒤셀도르프 예술아카데미에 입학하여 1993년 A.R. 펭크(A.R. Penck)로부터 마이스터 슐러(Meister Schueler)를 취득하였다. 1995년에는 나고야시 예술장려상을 받았다. 1998년에 미국의 UCLA에서 객원 교수로 재직하였으며, 독일과 일본, 미국을 거점으로 활발한 작품 활동을 하고 있다.

일본 ‘네오 팝(Neo Pop)’을 대표하는 그의 예술은 이른바 ‘오타쿠’라고 하는 일본 하위문화 옹호 세대를 배경으로 탄생하였다. ‘네오 팝’이 일본 만화와 애니메이션 등 대중문화에 바탕을 두고 있는 것은 사실이지만, 그의 경우 자신의 어린 시절의 경험과 청소년기부터 몰입해온 저항과 자유를 노래하는 로큰롤 음악에서 더욱 강한 영향을 받았다. 그의 작업은 순수미술 형식과 대중문화의 정서를 결합한 특유의 복합적인 양상을 보이며 커다란 주목을 받았다. 그의 그림은 세계 각지의 미술관이 그의 작품을 소장하고 있으며, 특히 우리나라에서는 요시모토 바나나의 소설 <하드보일드 하드 럭>의 일러스트로 유명하다.
