Since completing her PhD in Fine Arts at Hongik University, Eunjeong Choi has showcased her diverse works through solo and group exhibitions. Her paintings are filled with flashy signs, as if the viewer is looking into a digital world, and prompt audiences to imagine fantastical images that they’ve never considered before.

Choi creates a virtual world and repeatedly produces a space within a space by weaving together multiple scenes that unfold as if they were pieces of a memory. The physical properties of the three-dimensional masses of paint create the optical illusion of another dimension on the two-dimensional canvas. The artist’s portrayal of paradise-like scenes draws the viewer closer and conjures up memories of an idyllic space instead of creating a feeling of distance caused by the unfamiliar.

The strange compositions that do not occur in reality, illogical spaces, and links to the geometric world seen in Choi’s work are all symbolic of ‘hetero-ecotopia.’ This term, which accurately describes Choi’s works, is a combination of ‘heterotopia’—a term coined by Michel Foucault to refer to spaces that are different from the daily spaces in which we live—and ecological utopia. According to Choi, ‘Humans build cities and create civilizations, but at the same time, they also project all their emotions onto the cities they have forged and change them. A perfect city cannot be found anywhere, and as we all know from our own present lives, no one will create a life for you in paradise or a new city.’ Yet, Choi still explores ways of expressing, in different languages, the lives each of us lead in our urban environments.

Eunjeong Choi has held exhibitions titled Passage: Artificial Paradise (Seojung Art, 2022) and Post Analog Tendencies of MZ Generation (Osan Museum of Art). She has received the Grand Prize from Soorim Cultural Foundation (2018) and was selected as the winner of the 19th Danwon Art Award at the Danwon Art Museum.
