세계적으로 유명한 영국의 조각가 아니쉬 카푸어는 인도 봄베이 태생으로, 1972년에 미술 공부를 하기 위해 영국으로 건너갔다. 그는 혼지 미술 대학과 첼시 미술, 디자인대학을 다닌 후 울버햄프턴 폴리테크닉에서 학생들을 가르쳤고, 이후 리버풀에 있는 워커 갤러리에서 근무하던 중 미술가로 데뷔하였다. 이후 런던에 정착하여 지금까지 활발하게 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다.

1980년대 초반에 카푸어는 리처드 디컨(Richard Deacon), 빌 우드로(Bill Woodrow) 등과 함께 ‘영국의 젊은 조각가(The Young British Sculptors)’ 그룹의 한 일원으로 선정되었다. 이 그룹은 영국 문화원으로부터 전폭적인 후원을 받았으며, 실험적인 작품들로 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 그 결과, 카푸어는 1990년 제 44회 베니스 비엔날레에 영국을 대표하는 작가로 참가하여 ‘프리미오 듀밀라’ 상을 받았고, 이듬해 1991년 영국 최고 권위의 현대미술상인 ‘터너상’을 수상하였다.

카푸어는 인도와 유럽의 정체성을 모두 가지고 있는 아티스트로, 그의 작품은 동양 미술과 서양 미술의 간극을 연결한다고 평가받는다. 카푸어의 모든 작품을 관통하는 키워드는 ‘숭고함’이다. 물성을 가장 뚜렷이 드러내는 조각이라는 매체를 통해 물성을 뛰어넘는 정신적인 사유를 담아내는 것이 목표이며, 카푸어는 이를 위해 매일 새벽 1시간 동안 참선과 독경을 통해 내면과 마주한다. 카푸어의 작품은 이처럼 내면을 응시하고 성찰하는 과정을 통해 사물의 또 다른 모습을 이끌어내는 것을 특징으로 한다.
