Lives and works in Seoul, KOREA
Seongjoon Hong(b.1987) utilizes photographic images collected through cameras as materials for his works. By organizing landscape photographs that capture everyday life into painterly layers and connecting them with concerns about materiality, the artist tries various methods to reflect the relationship between the subject and the object being viewed or shown in twodimensional, three-dimensional, and installation works. In particular, the layers that fill the cross-section of the canvas create another illusion through the intervention of shadows, margins, and reflected light that fill the gaps between them. In this way, his work crosses the boundary between the representation of reality and the image of illusion, continuing his research on materiality.
Hong’s major solo exhibitions include 《Where did it come from pt.1, pt.2》(SEOJUNG ART, Busan/Seoul, Korea, 2024), 《ENFOLDING THE AIR》(Prompt Project, Seoul, Korea, 2023) and 《Flowing Layers》(Pipe Gallery, Seoul, 2022). Major selected group exhibitions are 《APRICITY》(FRIEZE LONDON, NO.9 Cork Street, London, UK, 2024), 《Flip Over》(This weekend Room, Seoul, Korea, 2024), 《DEAR CABINET》(SEOJUNG ART, Seoul, Korea, 2023) and 《Instead of a Result, a Process》(M5 Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, 2023).
