LIVES AND WORKS IN SEOUL, KOREA
Minhye Choi (b.1993) is currently based in the United States and South Korea after graduating with a BFA from Cornell University in 2016. She creates her own narrative on the flat surface using images and texts by setting up a fictional creature called an Image hunter. The artist converts text into painterly objects, textures, sizes, colors, etc. She calls this process “organized mythology.” The works are composed as if captured by a camera, with the image hunters appearing to cast spells on the canvas with brushes or gathering and rearranging images to paint on the canvas.
The images, which project the artist’s own worries, emotions, and intimate thoughts, are the result of an ongoing exploration of originality in the digital age, the weight of borrowing, and the relationship between capital and artwork. These self-reflective works are sometimes independent but loosely connected to each other.
